On January 17, 1995, Hyogo Prefecture and neighboring areas experienced the devastating effects of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. The citizens of Hyogo incurred tremendous damage as a result of the earthquake, including the loss of more than 6,400 lives, the collapse of commercial buildings, residences and highways, the stoppage of railway services between eastern and western regions of Japan, and the destruction of beautiful cityscapes.
However, in the 10 years following this natural disaster, the courage and efforts of local residents contributed to the revival of a more attractive and vigorous Hyogo area. In autumn 2005, the endeavors of the citizens blossomed with the opening of The Hyogo Performing Arts Center, which became a symbol of revival and a hub of future artistic developments in the Hyogo area.
The PAC Orchestra is a resident orchestra affiliated with the Center. The goals of the Orchestra are to present high-quality music through a wide range of performance activities, and to remain a beacon of hope for the people of Hyogo.
